Hopewell High School
Hopewell High School was named after the historic area in North Mecklenburg County. At first, this was the name of two historic churches on Beatties Ford Road: a Scots-Irish Presbyterian Church and an African-American congregation. Then, for over a century, the whole community around the new high school was called Hopewell. It even had its own post office. Out of this community came at least four different schools which were named Hopewell, including the first school for girls in the region. From this community came five signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, two important Revolutionary War battles, two Revolutionary War heroes who were killed fighting for liberty, and the leader who helped establish both Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. Several other public schools bear the name of Hopewell residents: Davidson, Bradley, and Alexander. Beatties Ford Road and Long Creek were also named for Hopewell citizens. The name represents a long and proud heritage. – Submitted by Anne Lowrance
